Year of Deputations
The 10th year of Hijrat is called Am-ul-Wafd, the Year of Deputations, because it was in this year that numerous tribes of Arabia came to the Holy Propheth to join Allah's faith.
Farewell Pilgrimage
The most important event of the 10th year of Hijrat was the Holy Prophet's farewell pilgrimage Hajjat-ul-Wida. When he decided to go to Makkah for performing the pilgrimage, messengers were sent to all parts of Arabia to inform the believers of the Holy Prophet'spbuh intentions and to invite them to join him in the great Pilgrimage.
The Holy Prophetpbuh left Madinah on the 26th of Ziqad, 10 A.H., in the company of one hundred fourteen thousand of his followers; all his wives accompanied him. On the 5th day of the following month, they reached Makkah where they performed the pilgrimage.
THE LAST SERMON
- The Holy Prophet (pbuh) delivered his last sermon in the plain of Arafat, near the Jabal-e-Rehmat, the "Mount of Mercy".
- The sermon contains an imperishable message for mankind.
- The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said: "O people! Listen to my words: for I do not know whether I shall be in your midst after this year."
- He reminded the people that they will have to appear before their Lord and account for their actions.
- The Holy Prophet (pbuh) emphasized the importance of treating wives with kindness.
- He said: "Verily, you have taken them on the warranty of Allah and made them lawful unto you by words of Allah."
- He also emphasized the importance of treating slaves with kindness and equality.
- The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said: "Feed and clothe your slaves as you feed and clothe yourselves."
- He warned against committing injustice and reminded the people that all Muslims are brothers to one another.
- The Holy Prophet (pbuh) emphasized the importance of worshiping Allah, offering prayers, observing fast, paying Zakat, and performing pilgrimage.
- No arab has any superiority over non - arab
- He concluded his sermon with the words: "Let him that is present tell it to him that is absent."
- The Quranic revelation came to him: "This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." (5:3)
- The Holy Prophet's (pbuh) Khutba Hajjat-ul-Wida showed that he knew he was nearing the end of his mission and earthly existence.
