Outline the Muslim teaching about belief in the oneness of God (tawhid).
Muslims believe that God alone is Lord, that He alone should be worshipped and that His names and attributes are unique to Him. Outline Muslim beliefs in the oneness of God
- Allah is eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, and self-subsisting. He has no parents, no offspring, and no partners in His dominion or attributes.
- Tawhid is the belief in the absolute oneness and unity of Allah, emphasizing that He is the sole Creator, Sustainer, and Master of the universe, worthy of exclusive worship.
- The Quran repeatedly stresses Allah’s oneness, as in Surah Ikhlas (112:1-4): "Say, He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, the Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten.”
- Shirk, the act of associating partners with Allah, is considered the gravest sin in Islam and is unforgivable unless repented from sincerely.
- Allah created and sustains the universe with perfect order and harmony, proving His oneness. Any belief in multiple creators would lead to chaos, as stated in the Quran (21:22).
- Had there been other gods besides Allah in the heavens or the earth, both ˹realms˺ would have surely been corrupted
- Belief in Tawhid shapes a Muslim’s entire life, ensuring obedience to Allah alone, avoiding sin, and rejecting all forms of false deities or intermediaries.
- Allah is beyond human comprehension, free from physical limitations, and unlike any of His creations. He is the sole Divine Being with no equals or rivals.
