- In 1960, during the Cold War, a U.S. U-2 spy plane was shot down while conducting a secret mission over the Soviet Union. USSR RUSSIA
- The plane took off from a U.S. base in Peshawar, Pakistan.
- Soviet forces shot it down, captured the pilot, Gary Powers, and imprisoned him.
- The USSR threatened Pakistan for allowing U.S. spy flights, worsening relations.
- The U.S. was forced to stop using Pakistani airbases for secret missions.
