• Hazrat Umar belonged to the Adi tribe of the Quraish and was considered a prince amongst them.
• His mother's name was Hantamah Bint Hisham and his father's name was Khattab ibn Nufayl.
• He was very intelligent and well-educated.
• He was a good poet and a good orator.
• He was known to be a headstrong man of great resolution.
• He felt that Islam had split the unity and faith of the Quraish and his forefathers.
• He became an enemy of Islam and the Prophet (S).
• When the Quraish delegation returned from Abyssinia, he picked up his sword to kill the Prophet (S).
• He met one of his clansmen, Nuaym ibn Abdullah, who had become a Muslim in secret.
• Nuaym told Hazrat Umar that his sister Fatima and brother-in-law Syed bin Zaid had accepted Islam.
• Hazrat Umar went to his sister's home and found her reciting the Quran.
• He read the words on the parchment, "Allah" (Surah Taha, 20:2-5).
• He was deeply moved by these words and went to Darul Arqam.
• He accepted Islam in the 6th year of the Prophet’s mission in Makkah.
• He became a strong fighter and protector of the Muslims in Makkah.
• He fought against the Quraish to allow Muslims to pray at the Kabah.
• He was known for his temper and physical strength.
• He made the Hijrah to Madinah with the other Muslims in the 13th year.
• He migrated openly, according to tradition, when he migrated he said out aloud that if any one wants to widow her wife or orphan his children should come forth to stop him.
• He was close to the Prophet (S) and participated in battles such as Uhud.
