• His Father was a merchant and one of the richest men in Mecca
• Hazrat Usman was known for his chastity and did not worship idols or drink wine before embracing Islam
• He was first among the Umayyas to convert to Islam
• Spent time in the company of the Holy Prophet
• due to his outstanding character he was married to two of the Prophet's daughters, Kulsum and Ruqayyah thats why he is known as Zun Nurain. Possessor or 2 lights.

Elections of Khalifa

• H.usman was chosen differently than the previous 2 caliphs. actually H.umar chose a council of 6 companions of holy prophet (ashrah mubashrah), and asked them to choose a khalifa among themselves.
• so h.umar actually wanted to nominate abu ubaidah bin jarrah, but he was martyred.
• of those 6 hazrat Talha wasnt available as he was away. and H.Abdurrehman bin Auf backed out of the contest. now remained, H.Ali, H.Usman, H.Zubair and H. Sa’ad bin abi waqqas.
