what was rowlatt act? 4

it was named after Sir sidney rowlatt.

it was called black bill or black act by indians who protested against it

it gave british more power over indians

according to the act people could be tried in private by 3 high court judges

there was no right to appeal

people could be made to live in particular place

people could be arrested without warrant

could be kept in prison without trial.

following this act

jinnah and other indians resigned from imperial legislative council and angry protests began, cuz indians didnt approve of this act. strikes were organised throughout india, and Gandhi began his non-cooperation movement, people joined and huge demonstrations and processions were held

this happened cuz indians who served brits in WWI thought british would reward them with self-rule, instead they established control more firmly, indians felt betrayed hence protested

the passing of the act, led to mad protests which led to JALLIANWALA BAGH INCIDENT
