Fasting
- in the seocnd year of hijrah the fasting in the month of ramadan was made compulsory upon all adult muslims
- quran says: “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may learn self-restraint.
Zakat
- in the second year of hijrah zakat was also made obligatory upon all rich muslim
- quran says : and spend of your substance in the cause of Allah…..do good : for Allah loves those who do good.
change of Qiblah
- by this time muslims used to pray facing the masjid e aqsa, qiblah e awal. for over 16months
- in 2AH while prophet was leading asr prayer, it was revealed to him to switch to pray facing in the direction of kabah.
- the whole congregation immediately turned its face.
- quran says: we see the turning of your face to the heavens; now we shall turn you to a qiblah that shall please you. turn then your face in the direction of sacred masjid.
BATTLE OF BADR
- in 2AH Allah given the permission : ‘Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you”
- initially, as soon as prophet had reached madinah, quraish sent a message to madinans to hand over Holy prophet and muhajirs back to quraish,
- Aus and khzrj refused to do so, as they themselves had invited the muslims.
- Abu sufyan, one of the quraishi leaders was coming back from syria with his trade caravan. he feared while crossing from madinah nearby, that he might be attacked,
- hence he called for army from makkah for protection,
- another leader of quraish Abu jahl left with 1000 men army with 200 horses and 700 camels, while abu sufyan safely reached home, he called Abu jahl back.
- Abu jahl refused to come back without a fight with muslims.
- when prophet learnt about this he called muslims to take necessary steps, muhajir and ansar got together to protect. they managed to collect 313 men and 2 horses and 70 camels.
